Course Overview

BSc Health and Social Care – UCAS Code L510

BSc Health and Social Care with a Year in Practice – UCAS Code L511

Our flexible, broad-based degrees in Health and Social Care are the ideal starting point for a range of rewarding careers in a variety of sectors.

You will explore health and social care in a wide range of national and international contexts, covering themes including social policy, public health, epidemiology, psychology, human biology and physiology, law and ethics relating to health, equality, and social justice.

You will gain a clear understanding of the structures and policies underpinning health and social care in the UK and develop excellent communication, research and analytical skills that are highly valued by employers.

Why Health and Social Care at Swansea?

As a student at Wales’s largest provider of healthcare education, you will be immersed in a dynamic research and learning environment with many opportunities to build links with students from related disciplines.

This is part of our collaborative approach to health and social care, aimed at improving integration between the sectors and preparing you for a career working across traditional organisational and professional boundaries.

Your Health and Social Care experience

You can choose to study Health and Social Care as a 3-year BSc or a 4-year BSc with Applied Practice.

As part of the 3 year BSc in Health and Social Care, you will undertake modules in professional development and have the option to complete a work placement as part of your degree alongside your academic work.

The 4-year BSc Health and Social Care with Applied Practice offers an additional year in industry to the 3-year Health and Social Care degree. This additional year will give students the opportunity to experience work in the Health and Social Care services environment, allowing students to build their confidence and gain real-world experience.

Health and Social Care Careers

As a Health and Social Care graduate, a wealth of careers are open to you in the NHS, social services, the civil service, independent health and social care, and charitable organisations.

You also have many options for further study. Recent graduates have gone on to postgraduate teaching certificates, Paramedic Science courses, and Master’s level study in Social Work, Health Promotion, Cognitive Neuroscience and Humanitarian Aid.

Modules

This is a tightly-structured degree programme in which most modules are compulsory. You will follow progressive modules covering human anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, ethics, and psychology and sociology in healthcare.

How You're Taught

We are proud to provide an outstanding educational experience, using the most effective learning and teaching approaches, carefully tailored to suit the specific needs of your course. Apart from a small number of online-only courses, most of our courses consist of in-person, on-campus teaching, enabling full engagement with your lecturers and fellow students.

Practical skills sessions, lab work seminars, and workshops predominantly take place in person, allowing for group working and demonstrations. We also operate virtual labs and Simulated Learning Environments which will facilitate greater access to training opportunities in the future. However, our approach also includes the use of some online learning to support and enhance traditional face-to-face teaching.

Online learning may take place ‘live’ using software such as Zoom, allowing you to interact with the lecturer and other students and to ask questions. Lecture recordings also allow for more flexibility to revisit material, to revise for assessments and to enhance learning outside of the classroom. Some modules have extra resources in Canvas, such as videos, slides and quizzes enabling further flexible study.

You will be taught through a variety of methods including lectures, workshops, discussion groups, presentations, debates, online discussions, and group and individual learning tasks over 7-10 hours during a three-day period.

Learning is assessed through essays, presentations, exams and practical tests. You will have access to a personal tutoring network and student support services throughout your studies.

During year two, you will have the opportunity to choose a work placement module with placements available in voluntary organisations, council-based social services, educational services, supported living services, and many others.

This course may offer some modules taught through the medium of Welsh or bilingually for students who consider themselves to be fluent Welsh speakers. For more details on the provision available see the Welsh Provision expander below.

  • One-to-one support to improve your academic Welsh language skills.
