Swansea University Simulation - SUSIM

We work together so at Swansea we learn and train together too. Learning to work together in highly effective ways enhanced by simulation-based education methods ensures confident and proficient students and healthcare professionals who reflect in and on action and develop open communication and team behaviours.

Growing evidence shows that advanced models of simulation-based learning is of benefit for the learner, and enables us to bring together dispersed sites, expertise, and professions to advance educational experience and outcomes.

We use a hub and spoke model of delivery, enhancing our flexible and agile learning spaces and approach. Our hubs will also allow our students to further develop their skills through independent learning which complements formal teaching sessions and simultaneously supporting individual learner needs.

Swansea University has a wide variety of simulation types that are integrated and expanding throughout our suite of clinical, health, and social care programmes.

These include; simulated Patients, Manikin based simulation ranging from low to high technology resources, Hybrid simulation (a mix of multiple methods), augmented, virtual, and assisted realities and computer based simulation. We also have Immersive wall simulation suites coming soon. These will enhance all forms of simulation and interprofessional learning opportunities.

The SUSiM programme has several collaborative partnerships and research projects that we will be showcasing as our SUSiM programme expands.

We have a number of collaborations with leaders in the field of Virtual Reality and Simulation including; the VR department of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, ACCELERATE, Rescape, and local health boards.

Additionally, we are also members of and work closely with a number of Simulation Societies including: HEIW Simulation, Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare (ASIPH), the Society for Simulation in Europe (SESAM), the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSIH) and the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning. 

We work with simulation industry partners such as CAE, Laerdal, Gaumard and Simbodies to support our programmes with the latest in simulation technological advancements.

Our hubs will also allow our students to further develop their skills through independent learning which complements facilitated learning sessions and simultaneously supporting individual learner needs.

Utilising an interprofessional team of simulation champions, simulation educational sessions, innovations in simulation such as use of mix reality and research opportunities in this field are rapidly expanding. This will be supported by the opening of state-of-the-art immersive learning spaces across our campus sites to allow students to feel highly immersed into realistic environments to prepare them for clinical and community practice and workplace placements.

As we develop and progress our simulated education programmes to be embedded across our health and clinical courses, we will bring online more exciting opportunities which will enhance the simulated learning experience for our students.
