Steve’s teaching and research focus on Applied Linguistics and the Welsh language, primarily in the fields of sociolinguistics, language planning, language acquisition and linguistics. He has over thirty years experience as a teaching, assessment and curriculum practitioner in the Welsh language, joining the Department of Continuing Education in 1991 as a lecturer before transferring to the College of Arts and Humanities in 2010. 

Steve has been a full member of the Association of Welsh Translators and Interpreters since 2006. He was elected to the Executive Committee of the British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL) in 2012 and became Treasurer in 2014.

The interdisciplinary interface between Applied Linguistics and the Welsh Language continues to be the prime focus of his work. In 2017 with Tess Fitzpatrick, he established and now convenes the ALAW (Applied Linguistics and Welsh) network. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has served as an external examiner, consultant and moderator for a number of national, UK and European institutions.
