This module provides medical students with the foundation of scientific knowledge, which is required for the practice of medicine. Focusing on the principle of the Doctor as Scientist and Scholar (Tomorrow's Doctors, GMC 2009), this module enables students to develop their scientific knowledge within a clinical context.

This module will focus on the principles of antimicrobial therapy and development of resistance. This is one of the most important issues facing modern medicine and the module will have a clinical emphasis. The module will provide an understanding of the development, mechanisms and implications of antimicrobial resistance and the principles of appropriate prescribing and antibiotic stewardship, with particular reference to current UK clinical practice.
