About

Greg Herman (MA Hons; MLitt; PhD; PGCE; FHEA) is a Senior Lecturer in French in the Department of Modern Languages, Translation and Interpreting. His PhD (University of Aberdeen, 2013) focused on the Second World War testimony of Buchenwald deportee, Jorge Semprun and in particular the tension, present throughout Semprun’s work, between his self-imposed ‘devoir de mémoire’ and his simultaneous desire to forget the traumatic past.

Following his PhD, Greg completed a PGCE (Secondary French) with the University of Cumbria, after which he took up post with Swansea University in September 2014. Currently working on theories of re(-)presentation within contemporary French cinema and in particular the works of Céline Sciamma and François Ozon, Greg welcomes enquiries about postgraduate supervision in all areas of 20th-21st Century French and Francophone literature and culture.

At undergraduate level, and in his capacity of Admissions Tutor, Greg also welcomes contact from prospective students keen to discuss their progression to Higher Education.

Areas Of Expertise

Teaching Interests

Underpinning much of Greg’s teaching is a desire to ‘speak truth to power.’ Focusing on the re(-)presentation of processes of marginality, inclusion, and exclusion, his undergraduate teaching covers the colonial period to the present day, and intertwines theoretical approaches with cultural practices to foster an understanding of contemporary society and what it means to belong. He also contributes to the department wide module, ‘Introduction to Language Teaching’, and convenes the final year module ‘Classroom Practices’ which, in matching students with local schools, provides students with invaluable practical experience should they wish to progress to our PGCE programme in Modern Foreign Languages. Greg also teaches French language and translation across all undergraduate year groups.
