About

Cerys Davies’ teaching draws on her extensive experience of working as a legal professional, both as a police officer with the Dyfed Powys Police Service, and as a practising solicitor, having specialised in Employment Law. She read Law at the universities of Oxford, Cardiff and South Wales, and, more recently, gained her PGCE from UWTSD.

Her professional background and subsequent teaching career has shaped her pedagogical commitment to making students’ learning of the Law real and relevant. Cerys is a fluent Welsh-speaker and a keen advocate for the promotion of the language in both educational and legal contexts. She has a particular interest in ensuring that, alongside the attainment of knowledge, students develop the skills necessary for their future careers.

Cerys tutors on both the First Year Tort Law Modules, and the Second Year Criminal Law Modules (including Welsh medium seminars in both subject areas), is Module Director for Tort II in Semester 2 and supervises the Litigant Help Desk at the Swansea Civil and Family Justice Centre.

LA-362 Criminal Law for Graduate Diploma in Law

After examining a number of the criminal law¿s basic principles and fundamental concepts, this fifteen credit module examines the law governing homicide offences, non-fatal offences against the person and sexual offences. As well as furthering students¿ ability to analyse and apply the law to factual situations, the module develops students¿ ability to independently assess and evaluate competing arguments by considering certain topics, of particular contemporary relevance, in especial detail. This fifteen credit module examines the law governing property offences, intoxicated defendants, mental condition defences, substantive defences, inchoate offences and accessories. As well as furthering students¿ ability to analyse and apply the law to factual situations, the module develops students¿ ability to independently assess and evaluate competing arguments by considering certain topics, of particular contemporary relevance, in especial detail.
LAA103 Law of Tort 1

The Law of Tort is a branch of the civil law which provides possible remedies for the protection of a person¿s interests in relation to different forms of loss which may be experienced as a result of different types of incident. Examples of loss considered in this module include physical damage to the body or to property, injury to reputation and injury caused by the condition of premises. In deciding whether there is liability in tort, the claimant is required to demonstrate that he was owed a duty by the defendant and it may be vital to determine the degree to which one side or the other was to blame for what happened. It may matter whether the defendant caused the injury deliberately, negligently, or there may be liability even though the person who has caused the damage was not to blame at all.

While the law of tort in general is comprised of a number of distinct `torts¿, Law of Tort II is exclusively concerned with the tort of negligence. Negligence is numerically the most common and easily the most flexible in terms of the interests that it protects. Negligence is able to provide remedy in a number of situations including personal injury, psychiatric harm, property damage and economic loss. Law of Tort II will consider in detail all aspects of negligence from the inception of a claim to the eventual award of compensatory damages.
