College of Science Year in Industry options

All of departments in the College of Science currently offer some courses which have a year in industry option. This is where you spend a year on a paid work placement. These courses will be a year longer than the standard degree of the same name. If you are studying a BSc/BA/MEng/MSci course, this will be your penultimate year. If you are studying MPhys, this will be your third year.

The Year in Industry must be taken with a sector relevant employer or organisation and can be taken either locally, nationally or overseas. The advantages of taking the year in industry are extensive, giving you the opportunity to apply your skills in a work based environment which in turn will greatly enhance your CV and employment prospects. The College will provide ongoing support and guidance prior to your placement in through the pre-placement module, and while you are on placement through regular contact points with staff.

The College has strong links with a number of organisations who are working with us to provide a range of placement opportunities. However, securing a placement is the responsibility of the student. If you are unable to secure a placement by the end of the second year of your course you will transfer onto the equivalent 3 year degree programme.

Student profile

Rhys Miller, BSc Computer Science with a Year in Industry student, says  “I learned so many skills during my placement at Wheelies – time management, agile project management, collaborative working and communication skills. I also put my coding knowledge to good use.”
