KUMA Robot in lab

The FMRI is Swansea’s newest Research Centre, and it aims to transform the field of manufacturing through a unique combination of expertise and facilities in the areas of:

(i) digital manufacturing and design, robotics, automation, control, data analytics, artificial intelligence, the human-machine interface and multiscale computer modelling

(ii) advanced materials and device design, prototyping and additive manufacturing from the nano to the macro scale

The Institute’s hub is the brand new Engineering North building funded by the £35M IMPACT project. IMPACT is complemented by state-of-the-art facilities in the Welsh Centre for Printing and Coating, the Swansea Additive Manufacturing Research Centre, the Materials Advanced Characterisation Centre and further facilities across the College.  The Institute’s facilities provide state of the art equipment together with extensive co-location spaces for industrial and academic collaborators.

Collaborative research with industrial partners is comprehensively supported via the FMRI’s participation in two recently funded EPSRC Centres for Doctoral Training in (i) Enhancing Human Interactions and Collaborations with Data and Intelligence Driven Systems, and (ii) Functional Industrial Coatings, and the ASTUTE operations.

The Institute is also host to several prestigious Fellowships.
