Research Project
The research module will involve constructing and executing a substantial research project, usually conducted in connection to a mental health and clinical research topic/theme. Capitalising the on the links between the course and local services, there may be opportunities to conduct research within partner organisations (eg NHS trusts, mental health charities, forensic units) as well as undertaking research based on topics generated by academics based within the department of psychology. We also encourage students who come to the program with connections as a consequence of previous professional experience, to undertake projects that are linked to interests they have already established.

Research Project
The research module will involve constructing and executing a substantial research project, usually conducted in connection to an abnormal and clinical research topic/theme.
Previous research projects have spanned various applicable clinical settings linked to NHS trusts, mental health charities, forensic units and topics generated by academics based within the department of psychology. We also encourage students who come to the program with connections as a consequence of previous professional experience, to undertake projects that are linked to interests they have already established.

Generic Research Skills - Research Methods in Psychology
This module will give students the foundation research methods skills necessary to understand, design and execute research in psychology, and to interpret and report research results. The approach is a focus on research practices that improve transparency and reproducibility. The skills developed in this module include: generating research hypotheses, causal inference, internal and external validity, construct validity, survey methods and questionnaire design, experimental setting and web-based data collection, ethics and fraud, statistical power and research reproducibility, systematic review of the literature, meta-analysis, writing research reports and communication skills (e.g., conference presentations, poster design), single-case methods, and service evaluation/audit. The module comprises of 2-hour weekly lectures. The module will assess how students apply these skills in critical analyses and a research proposal containing the rationale and the methods sections for the students¿ MSc dissertation. By the end of the module, students will have acquired knowledge of the journey from a research idea to data collection, presentation of findings, and journal submission. Students will be asked to read the content provided for personal work and to reflect on the range of research methods. Finally, the role of teamwork and collaborative work in research will be discussed. Instruction will be carried out through seminars, practical exercises, assignments, and discussions.

Professional issues in forensic psychology practice
This module combines a focus on being an ethical scientist-reflective practitioner with systemic skills relating to professional development, training, supervision, consultancy and advice. This module examines the opportunities and challenges associated with interdisciplinary and multi-agency working and with working with different client groups and organisations. Students will explore and experience theories and approaches to reflection, supervision and self and other development, along with methods for providing formal advice, consultation and training to others. Although present across the programme, this module includes a specific focus on governance, ethical practice and professional standards, and the roles of policy, procedures and official guidelines within the workplace. This module will combine taught content with group discussions, group inquiry based learning, role plays and independent learning.

Understanding and working with those who offend
This module examines the psychological factors associated with offending behavior and the approaches to assessment, formulation and treatment used in criminal justice and forensic mental health settings. This module will consider models of general and specific offending behaviour, the Risk, Needs and Responsivity, and Good Lives Model of offending and desistence and approaches to risk and boundary assessment and management. Students will consider `what works¿ with respect to offending behaviour treatment and the importance of practice based evidence and outcome research in forensic contexts. Throughout this module, students will apply their learning to fictitious cases and scenarios through discussions and group tasks.

Final Year Independent Research Project
Students conduct an independent research project under the supervision of a member of staff. The research topic is decided in conjunction with supervisors and Research topics. Students must design, conduct, analyse and write up a piece of research in order to achieve Graduate Basis for Chartership with the British Psychological Society (BPS). They must also complete an Ethical Considerations Form, showing that they have considered and resolved ethical issues relating to their project, and that they have implemented appropriate best practices for improving the reproducibility of their research.
