A project team has been established that will be working closely with Academic and Professional Services staff to ensure the successful implementation of Canvas. This team comprises of 8 Academic Developers, Development Manager, Project Manager, Change Manager and Project and Change Officer. An Academic Developer has been assigned to each of the academic colleges for training and support.

Senior Academic Developer
Melanie Hainke has worked at Swansea University since 2016, gaining experience in Professional Services roles, the School of Medicine and the College of Engineering. In this time, she has gained extensive experience in the application of Technology Enhanced Learning, most notably via the Blended Learning Pilot and the creation of active learning classrooms. Melanie joined SALT in September 2019 as a Senior Academic Developer for the Canvas project, with responsibility for the training programme for university staff.
Melanie has been involved in education for 25 years across a variety of teaching, coaching, training and project management roles. She has worked in the sports sector, managing and quality assuring the national education programme for athletics coaches, responsible for training and CPD of the workforce. Her teaching experiences range from lecturing in FE Colleges and University, as an Associate Lecturer for the Open University, specialising in Sports Coaching and Fitness.
Academic Developer for College of Arts and Humanities.
Liza Penn-Thomas has worked in Swansea University since 2007 joining SALT in 2018 to provide frontline support for Technology Enhanced Learning, particularly the university’s digital learning platform. Now with the Canvas Project Team, Liza is lead Academic Developer for COAH. She has had over 25 years’ experience supporting diverse learners, and their teachers, in community, further, and higher education.
Liza has a passion for creative communication in teaching and research – winning several awards at Swansea University in recognition of this. She is particularly interested in the benefits to learning and well-being provided by play, reading for pleasure, and creative expression in H.E. environments.
She is also a poet.
Academic Developer for the College of Engineering.
Jenny Tetlow joined SALT in September 2019 and is the SALT Canvas lead Academic Developer for the College of Engineering and the support for the Hillary Rodham Clinton School of Law.
In her early career she worked as a chartered process engineer for the oil, gas and insurance industries. She later migrated to working in project and safety learning development, teaching and education in industry, project consultancy and secondary school (mathematics) education. She brings an understanding of learning design and delivery with the use of technology in both public and private sector settings.
Academic Developer for the College of Human and Health Sciences.
Stephen Beale joined Swansea University in 2012, initially working as a tutor in ELTS while also later working as the VLE Co-ordinator for that department. He started in SALT in September 2019 and is the lead Academic Developer for the College of Human and Health Sciences (CHHS) and the support for Swansea University Medical School. He is also a recent Master’s graduate of CHHS so he has a keen awareness of the student experience at both the college and the wider university levels.
With over 11 years’ of teaching experience in Europe and Asia with non-native speakers of English, Steve has worked with students in a wide variety of contexts in 4 different countries and is a skilled intercultural communicator. He also has a keen interest in Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL), language learning, and physical activity as a means to promote healthy lifestyles and wellbeing.
Academic Developer for College of Science.
Julia Hopkins joined The Canvas Project Team in September 2019 and is the lead Academic Developer for the College of Science and the support for the School of Management.
Prior to joining Swansea University Julia worked for fifteen years in various IT roles including software development, system administration, IT security and digital forensics. In 2012 she returned to Wales to study Fine Art, recently completing an MA in Fine Art at the Royal College of Art followed by a PGCE for post-compulsory education.

Carys Howells joined the Canvas Project Team in September 2019 and is the lead Academic Developer for Swansea University Medical School, and the support developer for the College of Arts and Humanities. Carys completed her doctorate within the Department of History and Medieval Studies in 2015. She has since held a number of positions at the University of Warwick including Teaching Fellow in Modern History and Acting Director of Student Experience.
Academic Developer for the Hillary Rodham Clinton School of Law and The School of Management
Mark joined the Canvas Team in April 2020, after working as an Academic Quality Development Officer at Swansea University. Prior to re-joining Swansea, he worked as a Taught Programmes Manager in Health Sciences at Cardiff Metropolitan University. Mark holds a Postgraduate Degree in Human Resource Management, which he achieved in 2014 whilst working as a HR Officer at Cardiff University.
Outside of work, Mark has worked in Sports Media for both Cardiff Devils and Cardiff City FC. Mark has performed in numerous male voice choirs, including Swansea’s own Black Mountain Male Voice, plus TV and Musical Theatre. He also enjoys playing both football and Ice Hockey and is an avid supporter of Tottenham Hotspur FC and Toronto Maple Leafs.
Academic Developer for The College & ELTS.
Fred has worked within Swansea University at the Students’ Union since 2015 and has joined the SALT team as lead Academic Developer for ELTS and The College and the support for College of Engineering. He has delivered on various technology and process-change projects, conducted end-user training and supported student and alumni engagement initiatives at Swansea and Aarhus University. Having a systems implementation background, he is enthusiastic about the benefits that well-employed VLE technologies can bring to Swansea, supporting teaching and helping deliver outstanding student experiences.
SALT Development Manager
Simon Gibbon is responsible for the strategic and operational development of the Continual Professional Development (CPD) and Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) Development teams within SALT. He has over 10 years experience working within learning and teaching. Early in his career he taught Science and Biology within secondary school education before moving into technology enhanced learning in the Higher Education sector. Simon is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Sean Cahill is a Strategic Project and Change Manager and has been employed by Swansea University since 2015. In the context of the Canvas implementation, Sean is a member of the leadership team focussing specifically on project management activities. Previous projects at the university have included Attendance & Engagement Monitoring, Learner Analytics, Blended Learning and working with SALT and other colleagues across the university on various technology enhanced learning related business case developments. Before joining the university, Sean held numerous technology and project management roles in local government and IT outsourcing.
Ben is a Strategic Project and Change Manager and has worked for Swansea University since 2017. As part of his role, Ben supports the university in the delivery of its strategic projects and associated business change activities, and is currently leading on the Change Management elements of the Canvas Project. Ben previously project managed the successful delivery of a pan-Wales Science and Innovation Audit, led by Swansea University, on behalf of the UK Government Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. He also led the development of a Student Journey Map and performed the role of Strategic Partner to the College of Human and Health Sciences. Prior to his employment at Swansea University, Ben worked and delivered projects in the law enforcement and criminal justice arena. Ben is eager to see the benefits that the implementation of Canvas will bring to students and staff at Swansea University.
Project and Change Officer
Daisy joined Swansea University in 2019 and is currently the Project and Change Officer for the Canvas Project. Having recently completed her PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner qualification, she has knowledge and experience in assisting in project and change management activities. Daisy has experience working in further education and local government authority and holds an undergraduate degree in Computing and IT.
