Professor Meissner graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering from Lehigh University in 1987. He did his graduate work at the University of Arizona Optical Sciences Center under the supervision of Professor Nasser Peyghambarian using femtosecond spectroscopy to study quantum-confined semiconductor materials. After graduating with his PhD in 1994, Professor Meissner was a Postdoctoral Appointee in the Surface Physics group researching both white light emitters and intracavity spectroscopy on cells. He then worked for a small company and start-up company working in the area of non-invasive glucose diagnostics for diabetics.
In 2000, Professor Meissner joined Virginia Tech as the Senior Research Scientist with the Optical Sciences Research Center where he worked on technology transfer as well as initiated a research programme in the area of semiconductor nanocrystals. In 2004, he moved to the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Texas A&M University as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2010. In 2014, Professor Meissner moved to the College of Engineering at Swansea University as a Professor and Chair. From 2016-2020, he served as Head of Physics at Swansea University.
In academia, his research has centred on the development of novel optical techniques and materials for disease diagnostics as well as the adaptation of natural systems as platform systems. He has published over 90 papers and been PI or co-PI on more than £5M in grants from funders such as NIH, NSF, EPSRC, medical charities, non-profit organisations and companies.
During his career, Professor Meissner has served in numerous leadership positions including Director of the Engineering Honors Program (2010-2014) and Dean’s Fellow (2013-2014) at Texas A&M as well as Head of Physics at Swansea University (2016-2020). While at Texas A&M, he led the development of the successful Engineering undergraduate exchange programme with Swansea University.
