MRes in Nanoscience to Nanotechnology

Swansea is Engineering at one of the smallest scales known to man. From bio-electronics and nanobots through to new electronic devices and ultra-high-density storage, nanotechnology is set to have a major impact on society.

Swansea's leading-edge in nanotechnology is taking todays' challenges and turning them into tomorrow's reality.

The growth of the subject of nanotechnology is one of the most exciting developments in science and engineering in recent years. Much of the research in this area is interdisciplinary in nature, drawing expertise from different areas across the life science, physical science and engineering disciplines. This masters course will cover a broad range of subject areas, from the latest semiconductor fabrication technology, right across to biological and medical applications, with the emphasis throughout on characterisation and control of materials at the nanoscale*. The focus will be on both the techniques necessary for science at these very small dimensions, and the very latest research developments in this rapidly evolving area. The full-time MRes will consist of formal lectures, plus a year-long project in the Multidisciplinary Nanotechnology Centre within the School of Engineering. A key part of this course will be the ability to gain hands on experience of state-of-the-art fabrication and characterisation techniques such as atomic force microscopy and scanning tunnelling microscopy, to name just two. Topics covered will include:
